Braces for Adults

Braces for adults are a lot different than braces for children. Since adults are usually more responsible, there are many different types available.

Grown-ups can usually choose from a wide variety of corrective tooth gear. While children tend to be confined to the metal type, adults may decide upon metal, ceramic, or invisilign. Why do braces for adults come in many different styles while children are only allowed to choose one or two types? Sure, it’s true that adults have the ability to properly care for their teeth, but adult teeth are also unique as compared to children’s teeth.

You see, adult teeth have largely stopped growing altogether, which means that pushing them into line is a bit easier. Though children that are fitted for braces no longer lose their teeth, their teeth still need to be pushed into line using a tougher material (such as metal). Additionally, metal happens to be more durable than any other type of material, and this is something that most kids really need. If you are an adult that has just been told you will have to wear corrective tooth gear, you don’t need to worry about appearance.

Most grown-ups do not like the idea of wearing braces well into their adult years. In fact, many people will not even bother getting their teeth fixed due to the irrational fear that they will look funny or different. However, thanks to recent technology there is really nothing to worry about. A new invention called “invisilign” helps to straighten teeth while keeping those braces for adults largely invisible. If you cannot wear these (check with your orthodontist), you may want to consider corrective gear made from ceramic.

Ceramic comes in a white color that tends to blend in with one’s smile more effectively. Then again, ceramic can stain leaving you with the metal option. Now, metal is not what it used to be. If you are picturing metal braces with those gum colored elastics, it is time you stepped into the present where these elastics can come in any color you like – you can even change them to go with your outfit every day.

As you can tell, braces for adults have come a long way from the basic metal variety that was available many years ago. While kids may not have that many options, there are lots of different styles to choose from if you happen to be an adult. To see the all of your options, talk with your orthodontist today.
