Impacted Molar Surgery

If you have just been told that you must have impacted molar surgery, you are probably wondering what this means and what the operation entails. This article will help to clear up a bit of the confusion that you may be going through.

For some reason, dentists often explain simple procedures to patients using complex terms. Impacted molar surgery simply means that your wisdom teeth (tooth) must be extracted. Why? There are numerous reasons why this may occur, though usually it has something to do with the available space inside of your mouth. You see, although all of your teeth would love to grow up and settling inside of your mouth, your other teeth often refuse to budge. This causes a wisdom tooth that has nowhere to go.

If this tooth were left alone, it would grow inside of your gum in a crooked manner causing a lot of unnecessary pain. Therefore, most dentists choose to extract this type of tooth rather than waiting to see whether or not it can grow without a problem. As for the actual operation, this type of procedure has become so common that it is almost routine. In fact, so many teenagers must go through this operation that it has almost become a rite of passage.

These days, it is extremely rare for a dentist to render a person completely unconscious during this procedure. Instead, a patient will go under a local anaesthetic in order to complete the operation. During this time, a dentist will simply remove the wisdom tooth, sew up the open space, and leave it to heal. Patients often return home the very same day with a sore mouth, a few cotton balls, and a tub of ice cream (this is the only thing that most people can eat following a wisdom tooth surgery). As you can see, impacted molar surgery is really no big deal at all.

Now that you know what to expect, you shouldn’t fear this operation in any manner. Your dental professional performs many of these operations daily, so you are in good hands. Simply sit back, watch as your dentist pulls out your tooth, and go home to a large ice cream sundae – now, that doesn’t sound too bad, does it?

Impacted molar surgery is so common these days that hardly everyone you know has probably gone through this procedure at one time or another. Thanks to modern medicine, this operation is now as simple as sitting in a chair and relaxing while your dentist takes care of that pesky wisdom tooth.
