Orthodontic Braces
Have you recently been told that you will need to wear orthodontic braces? If so, you have nothing to fear. Here are some details that will help you cope with this type of dental work.
First, let’s talk about the basics. Orthodontic braces are often used to correct the misalignment of teeth. The reasoning behind this type of dental work is simple – you need to have straight teeth in order to chew properly, and to avoid further dental damage. Though the thought of wires stuck to your teeth may sound slightly frightening, the good news is that braces come off after a little while leaving you with a gorgeous smile. Concerned about the actual procedure? No need to worry.
The first thing that your dentist (or orthodontist) will do is to take a set of x-rays followed by molds and impressions. Then, your dental professional will go over the results of the tests, and they will soon determine how long you need to wear braces for. Usually, most people have to keep them on for six months to two years, though it will depend upon your teeth. Next, you will have to visit the dentist once more in order to have the metal applied to your teeth.
Orthodontic braces are attached to teeth with an etchant that helps cement adhere to the surface of the teeth. Most of the time, your dentist will band your teeth and then add each bracket. A light is used to hardened the cement that holds the metal together (this doesn’t hurt), then a wire will be laced through the brackets and fixed with elastics (often colored) or metal ligatures.
Once your braces are on, you may feel a bit of tightening or pressure inside of your mouth. However, you will get used to this feeling and after awhile you will not feel anything at all. Though these pieces of metal may seem horrendous at first, they will ensure that your teeth are straight and perfect permanently (now, won’t that be worth it?).
As you can now tell, orthodontic braces are nothing to be concerned about. In fact, this procedure is done so often that your dentist probably goes through numerous patients just like you every month. Though it may be intimidating at first, there is really nothing to worry about other than practicing your stellar smile...
