Wearing Orthodontic Headgear

At first, the thought of wearing orthodontic headgear may be frightening, though there is really nothing to worry about when all is said and done.

What is it about wearing orthodontic headgear that leaves some patients running for the hills? Maybe it’s the way that those various pieces of metal connect together or maybe it’s the way that one’s face seems to be carved from steel – no matter what it may be, there can only be one result of wearing this gear. Once those braces are removed, you will have shiny, beautiful, straight teeth – now, isn’t that worth all the extra trouble? Still, you will have to wear that device for a little while before it can be thrown away for good.

The first question many new patients ask their orthodontist is: how long will I have to wear that headgear? Well, there isn’t any one answer to this query. Your orthodontist will tell you the amount of time that you must wear that ugly metal device based upon your unique situation. However, most people only have to wear it for a few hours per day (usually at night). While it may be a bit uncomfortable to being with, once you are fast asleep it won’t be any trouble at all.

The great thing about wearing orthodontic headgear is that most people around you will never even see it. If you must wear your gear in public, don’t worry – there are thousands of people just like you all over the world. In fact, you are lucky to be wearing corrective gear at all – many people that live in third world countries will never have the chance to fix their teeth. As you can see, it may not be your first choice, but having straight teeth is certainly a privilege.

Fortunately, many people within North America can afford to have braces thanks to insurance plans and lowered costs. Try to look upon your new braces as a sort of blessing in disguise – after all, nearly everyone wants to have straight teeth, right?

Now that you know there is nothing to fear when it comes to wearing orthodontic headgear, you can easily sleep well at night (don’t forget to attach that gear!). In a few months, those braces will be gone and you will be able to lighten the world with you new stellar smile.
