When Do Molars Come In?

When do molars come in? This is one of the most common questions that both adults and children ask. Interestingly, the answer will change from person to person.

If you were to flip through a dental book, you would find that most people have two sets of molars. The first set appears around the age of six, while the second set appears around the age of twelve. When do molars come in if they are considered “wisdom teeth?” Well, some people experience wisdom teeth (considered a third set of molars) between seventeen to twenty-one years of age. However, it is possible to go through the wisdom tooth stage earlier than seventeen – some even have to deal with them at  later age.

Of course, every person is different, so teeth may develop earlier or later in life depending upon the person. Most people that have that third set of molars, wisdom teeth, will have to have them removed. Why are wisdom teeth taken out? If these teeth are not extracted, they can push the other teeth inside of the mouth causing misaligned teeth that can lead to braces. If you make habit of brining your child to the dentist every six months, wisdom teeth can be detected in advance. For those that must wear braces, molars play a large part in starting this treatment.

Since braces cannot be applied until all teeth have been developed, many kids will have to wait until that second set of molars appears. This is one of the main reasons why the earlier question (when do molars come in?) is so vital to many young people. Most of the time, an orthodontist will inform a patient that they need to have braces put on, though they must wait until all teeth are in to move ahead with this procedure. In short, for many kids the day of the molar is likened to doomsday.

If you happen to be waiting for that fateful day when braces will be applied to your teeth, you should know that there is really nothing to fear. Braces have come a long way from their earlier years, which means that they are much more comfortable and aesthetically appealing. Either way, you can’t stop those teeth from growing, so you’ll just have to wait for your teeth to finish appearing on the surface of your mouth.

To answer the earlier question in its entirety (when do molars come in?), these teeth usually appear when they are ready to. Luckily, most people will go through the molar stage around the twelfth year, though some will have to wait for those pesky wisdom teeth to come and go before braces can be applied.
